Espresso As Filter: Why You Should Be Brewing It at Home
Elysian Espresso isn’t only for espresso machines. Brewed as filter, in a pour-over or a French press, it’s our most versatile crowd pleaser.
More than once, someone on our team has taken a bag of our espresso home, brewed it in their V60, and come back the next day wide-eyed. “Have you tried the espresso as filter? It’s really, really good.”
What espresso means at Elysian
Elysian Espresso is made for the espresso machine: hot water pushed through a tight bed of fine grounds under pressure. Getting all the sweetness out of a coffee that way is harder than you might think, so we make it as easy as we can.
It starts with buying. For our espresso, we choose coffees that are naturally high in sweetness. Then we give it a little more development in the roaster. That doesn’t mean darker. It means roasting to bring out as much sweetness as the coffee has to give. The result is roasted coffee that brews beautifully under the conditions an espresso machine creates.
We do everything we can to make our espresso as sweet as possible.
Why it works as filter
Because we buy and roast our espresso for sweetness, that sweetness carries over to filter too. Elysian Espresso brews up easily however you make it. That extra development means as filter this coffee becomes richer and rounder, with little to no acidity. The flavours are strongly brown sugar and chocolate. It’s delicious!
The crowd pleaser
If you have people coming over for family gatherings and holidays and need a coffee that everyone is likely to enjoy, you’ve got to try our espresso as filter. It’s familiar enough to those who haven’t done the speciality coffee deep dive yet, while still landing with the most dedicated coffee lovers. It’s also the most versatile coffee on the menu. Brew it as espresso in the morning and whoop up a French Press after lunch. If you’re looking for a one size fits all coffee, this is it.
How to brew it as filter
Use the same recipe you’d use for any filter coffee. Not sure where to start? Open our Brew Calculator, choose your brewer and follow the recipe. If it tastes a little strong, brew it again and grind a touch coarser.
How to brew it as espresso
We’ll do a longer piece on this in the future, but we typically weigh 18g of ground espresso in, and pull between 35 to 45 g of espresso out. Yes, we really recommend weighing the coffee in and liquid espresso out. Try a shorter 35g shot for a shorter drink with steamed milk like a Flat White and 45g out for something larger like a latte.
Happy brewing!
